There are five things you need to know about The Royal George. We serve the finest food. We stock superb ales. We have five beautiful B&B rooms, including our prestigious Heritage Suite. The inn has a claim to being the oldest in England, dating back to the 13th Century. And our name has a fascinating provenance too…
Not forgetting lagers, ciders, wines, spirits and a host of other refreshing liquid delights. As a Free House, we love to select the very best ales from renowned breweries locally and farther afield. We stock firm favourites and an ever-changing range of eclectic craft beers. And we’re certain you’ll find our wines absolutely delicious. Ask us what’s new and enjoy something different.
All our dishes are lovingly prepared and cooked right here, in our own kitchens. Our menu changes regularly as we like to make the very best of our local suppliers and seasonal produce.
To book a table in our bar or restaurant, please give us a call on 01536 660505 (temporary number 07763 500002). If we’re not here or are busy with customers, please leave us a message and we’ll get back to you.

Stay overnight. Or for the weekend. Or much longer if you wish. We have five stylishly furnished, comfortable bedrooms, each with private en-suite facilities and quality beds. Our Heritage Suite is without doubt the most fascinating bedroom in the inn – it’s the one with the famous cruck truss beams. Our B&B tariff includes a full English breakfast to set you up for the day. With superb rolling countryside right on our doorstep, there’s so much to do. Enjoy country walks, cycling and horse riding, and take in the many interesting amenities, places to visit and attractions, all just a stone’s throw away.
Quite apart from the finest food, outstanding real ales and the kind of atmosphere you will only find in a traditional English coaching inn, The Royal George also offers a truly fascinating history.
